“Hey man where did you get those sweet shades?” I seem to be asked that question almost as often as I get sunburned in Panama, which is on a regular basis. As cheap, nice sunglasses are on the “To-Do” list of most travelers to Central America, Mexico or any country less expensive than their own, I found a gem of a place that I must share with you. Whether you are a traveler just passing through the Isthmus or a resident trying to protect your retinas while looking cool, sunglasses are an important part of your world. While seeing sunglasses salesman on the sides of the road selling their merchandise to drivers is common, these men will never give you Read more

Where’s the best spot to buy clothing in Panama City?
Depending on your income, lifestyle and fashion sense this can be a difficult question to answer. Panama City’s got it all from modern, luxurious super malls to the lesser known street markets of Caledonia. (Click here to read our article on this off-the-grid shopping spot!) Now being an ESL teaching Gringo on a budget my primary prerogative in searching for clothing is price. I came to this country with very little, and the clothes I did bring were better suited for a holiday by the beach rather than living in a trendy metropolis. My tennis shoes and shorts weren’t adequate dress for educating Panamanian youth or attempting to acquire dates with the beautiful local women so I soon realized Read more
Beautiful Furniture for you and the Planet!
The following post comes to us from guest blogger Cathy Scott of HighRockCleanLiving.com, our favorite furniture supplier in Panama:
I grew up spending all my summers at a lake in Canada in Northern Ontario. If you’ve ever been there, you will know that no cottage is complete without Adirondack Chairs. My father built beautiful ones out of wood. My eldest son builds them out of old wooden hockey sticks. However, neither has the time nor the energy to do this anymore. Not to mention the paint eventually starts to crack and peel and eventually the wood rots.
My husband and I then started to purchase the low cost plastic Adirondack chairs. Much to my dismay, they would blow Read more
Panama City Retail: A Mall for Every Shopper
Panama City is, in my opinion, a shopper’s paradise. There are four main malls in Panama City and each seems to draw tourists and locals inside and out of the heat by the hundreds. While I recommend shopping on the streets such as on Via Espana in El Congrejo the malls are a great way to spend the afternoon in air conditioning, grab a bite to eat and get some retail therapy.
The busiest mall in Panama is probably Albrook Mall near the Albrook air force base. The mall also houses the Albrook bus terminal likely helping keep it jam packed. Albrook offers some of the best prices in several discount stores such as Conway, Titan and El Costo Read more
Panama Real Estate: The Prices Are Still Unbeatable
In spite of a recent decline in the real estate market in the states, when compared with real estate prices in Panama for comparable homes are similar or far lower. I often browse and search through real estate listing in Panama just to see what is out there and what is being asked. Property in areas like Pedasi or Boquette interests me in particular because it always seems to be crazily lower than prices in Panama City. After visiting the Azuero Peninsula on several occasions I’ve set my sights on a small house near Pedasi. As I’ve slowly began browsing real estate in the Pedasi area I’ve came across many clean yet modest 2-3 bedroom, 2,000 ish sq. ft. Read more
Places to Shop Panama: Albrook Mall, Panama City
Albrook Mall near Albrook Airport in Panama City is a popular shopping spot with tourists and locals alike. It’s located next to a bus terminal and has a nice supermarket inside making it popular with bus riders that need to take food home. There are dozens of stores and restaurants as well as a cinema to entertain any shopper or innocent tag-a-long for hours. I recommend trying any of the authentic roasted chicken available for a guaranteed worthy mall meal. They have a store for every interest or need. From Panamanian souvenirs to designer swimwear to purses and backpacks in every color and size, they have a store for anyone to kill some time. You could take the little ones Read more
Decameron Panama: Beaches, Golf and Casinos Outside of Panama City
Decameron Panama, or The Royal Decameron Resort, Golf and Casino, is located just outside of Panama City in Farallon. This all inclusive resort has received mixed reviews from many visitors which leads me back to the issue of expectations when traveling Panama. When visiting this resort you should expect the typical Panamanian treatment and service. Your drink may not arrive at warp speeds, but you will get it. Your room may not be the most lavish nor will the hot water work 24 hours a day, but the staff won’t really care.
What you can expect in the Decameron Panama all inclusive resort is a great deal on food, drinks, fun and sun a short distance from the Read more

Grocery Shopping in Panama: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
When most of us think about moving abroad one of the last things we consider is where we’re going to stock our cabinets. So it was funny to me that on my first day in Panama City after enjoying my morning cup of coffee and taking in the views I got ready and headed to the grocery store. It’s that daunting task that we all hate to do even in our home countries.
On my first grocery excursion in Panama I hit up Riba Smith in Mall Multiplaza in Punta Pacifica. After all of my time spent in this country I still consider this store as The Good among grocers in Panama. Riba Smith boasts probably the cleanest (aside Read more
