Isla Taboga – A Nice Break from the City

Panama City can be a little overwhelming sometimes, and whether you are there for business or pleasure it can be nice to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Even if you only have a day you can still enjoy pristine beaches, amazing natural beauty and that laid back Panamanian way of doing things on Isla Taboga.

Isla Taboga is located 12 kilometers from the city, in the heart of the Panama Bay. Two ferries make several daily trips (check the schedule here), and a round trip ticket costs just US $10.00. The ride out to the island takes just under an hour, and it is well worth the trip. You can spend the day Read more

Nothin' like a bagel n' cream cheese

Looking for your morning bagel with cream cheese and a large coffee, served up North American style? Try New York Bagel Café in El Cangrejo, Panama City. This little coffee shop is pretty trendy; leather couches, tableside books, abstract paintings complete the laid-back environment. The owner, John, is a former member of the Peace Corps who put down roots in Panama.

The 20 different types of bagels include “Strawberry Fields”, “Frisco Sourdough”, and “Jumpin’ Jalapeno”. “Sundried Tomato Basil” cream cheese is just one of the 12 flavors you can choose from to top your bagel. He also makes 18 different types of sandwiches. To drink there are a number of flavored coffees, Italian sodas and juices. You can Read more

The Fiesta Starts Here!

El Fiesta Casino located behind Hotel El Panama is a great place to pass the evening. It has 561 different gaming machines and 20 table and poker games, including Blackjack, Poker, Roulette and Baccarat. Twelve machines are set aside for Sigma Derby Slots, which are pretty fun. When you first walk in, the place doesn’t seem that big, but it is actually spread out over 20,000 square feet.

The bar has a good variety of drinks, and is relatively inexpensive, especially for a larger casino bar. Throughout the place there are TVs for those who prefer to kick back and enjoy a drink in front of the big screen. There Read more

Empanadas: The Real Deal

Every once in a while I get a craving for a good empanada… the kind that is getting hard to find in Panama these days.

Recently, I started on a campaign to find the a recipe for the traditional Panamanian empanada, and this is what my sources came up with. I thought I’d put it up here, that way no matter where you are in the world, you can enjoy a little taste of Panama.

• 1 Tablespoon of olive oil
• 1/2 large Spanish onion, chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 3/4 pound ground pork
• 3/4 pounds ground beef

Fruit Drinks Stand in Panama City

The next time you are in Panama City, treat yourself to the wonderful juice and frozen juice based drinks at one of the local stands in the City.
They are usually drive through window-based and the fruits are just INCREDIBLE.

The Panama Gringo was feeling a little too tired when he sampled a frozen fruit punch on his last trip from a little too many carnivale activities the night before to get an actual address – just ask any cabbie – they will know.

Great Find – Cristal Blu Spa and Salon

If you thought the days of a GREAT $45 one hour massage were over, you have got to check out Cristal Blue Spa and Salon on Pomodoro Street and Veneto – very close to the gringo central hangout of the Veneto Hotel.

Ask for Rosa – she is skilled with an ability to find just the right pressure to deliver a high quality, full 60 minute massage that will leave you relaxed and revitalized for the rest of the day.

Many other services are available.  The place is s very clean and professional and they maintain a soft warm healing environment.
