There aren’t many places to stay in Perquin, your best, and possibly only option is the Hotel Perkin Lenca which is on the Hotel Perkin Lenca, Kilometer 205.5.

Hotel Perkin Lenca hosts a number of mountain cabins which run about $50 for double occupancy. Each cabin is accessed by means of its own foot path, making them quite private. Breakfast is included for all staying in the room. If you are traveling with a group ask about special group rates.

Palmero Woods – The Central Park of Buenos Aires

To get away from the hustle and the bustle of the city, while still being in the city, head over to Palmero Park. It is located about 15 minutes from the downtown area and is a favorite spot among locals for jogging, cycling, playing football, rollarblading, and just hanging out friends and family.

The park was developed in 1874, inaugurated in 1875 and covers more than 80 hectares of fully developed forests. One incredible feature of the park are its lakes; you can explore the aquatic plants and animals by boat or by water bike.

The park is divided into different sectaions like the Andalusian Yard, which is covered with trees foliage, the Poet’s Garden, which features sculptures by different Read more

Exchanging Money In Guatemala, from Dollars to Quetzals

If you are needing to change over money, make sure and do it early in the day.

The exchange rate for the Quetzal is recalculated daily at the Central Bank in Guatemala City. This happens daily at 3 pm. Therefore starting at about that time many banks refuse to change money, since they do not know the “current” exchange rate. It may seem like splitting hairs, but that is the way many banks do it. I have found the best way to avoid it is by making time to go to the bank in the morning to exchange money.

In addition, if you are in a more rural area, or a small town, not all banks handle foreign money. Bring Read more

Rancho Tipico Zarcereño, my favorita Soda

If you are Zarcero and you want to eat at the best Soda I have ever been to please stop and visit Rancho Tipico Zarcereño. Located just outside Zarcero on your way to Naranjo on the right hand side is where you can find some wonderful typical Costa Rican food. With many benches to sit at its all wood furnishing and its climate you may find this a perfect place to stop to eat.

I ordered a dish called Olla de Carne which is a soup that consists of beef and a variety of vegetables with a side of white rice. When I ordered at Rancho Tipico I received what must have been a punch bowl filled with the Read more

North Caribbean Panama – Playon Chico and Yandup Island

If you reallly want to get away from it all, then head to the North Central side region on the Caribbean side of Panama to Playon Chico. It is the closest thing I have found to paradise, and the longer I stay here, the more I enjoy myself.

There are several tiny islands that make up a small archipelago and they are owned and operated by the Kuna Yala Indians as part of their reserve. That keeps the area refreshingly clean of the typical tourist traps, and the beaches virtually untouched.

If you come up to Playon Chico then check out Yandup, an island located in the center of the Kuna Yala reserve. It is a great little place to stay, Read more

Live Music and Mixed Drinks at La Cigale

It’s Monday again, which means live music at La Cigale.

Los Lunes Estan de Moda (Mondays are in Style) is a now legendary cycle of music happenning tonight at 11 pm. (Things start late in BA!)

While the music doesn’t start until 11, La Cigale is open at 6 pm, if you want to warm up with some top shelf drinks. This is the place to go in Buenos Aires if you are looking for classic mixed drinks. The place has now become a standby location for the local crowd.

In addition to an extensive cocktail menu, there is also a kitchen menu that serves appetizers of local cheeses and salami.

While Mondays are the feature of local musicians, Tuesdays Read more

Museum of the Salvadoran Resistance in Perquin

El Salvador is known for its war-torn past, and although that is not what describes the country today, learning its history can help you better understand and appreciate its people and their heritage.

The city of Perquin, located high in the Morazan was known unofficiallly as being the guerrilla capital during the conflict. Now it is a peaceful city, but you can still appreciate its colored past by visiting the Museum of the Salvadoran Revolution, located in the center of town.

The Museum was founded right after the Civil War ended by a group of ex-combatants. It tell the story of the 12 years the nation spent fighting first hand through hundreds of photos, documents and weapons. It pays homage to the Read more

Opening a Bank Account in Guatemala

To obtain a bank account in Guatemala you need to have permanent residency in the country. At least that is the official answer, and the answer you will get if you try and open an account with Banco Quetzal.

However, if you try at Banco Reformador you will be asked to only present your passport and a copy of your utility bill, and possibly letters from two Guatemalans that know you. If you can’t produce two letters, then you may want to try Banco G&T, as all they require for you to open a bank account is a copy of your passport and a utility bill.

Foreigners are often told that they cannot open accounts in Guatemala, and while that Read more

Visit the Irazu Volcano outside of San Jose

Close to San Jose is a very accessible and beautiful volcano named Irazú. When planning to travel to Irazú make sure to bring a coat; because of its altitude you may find once you arrive the climate may be colder than what you were expecting. This is what happened to me and unfortunately I had to borrow a coat from someone because the only store located at the top of the volcano did not sell any coats in my size.

Also make sure you eat before going to the top of the volcano. The gift store and restaurant at the summit are overpriced and you can find better products elsewhere. For example they were selling a walking cane for eighty dollars Read more

Local Beer and Breweries in Panama

For all those beer fans out there, did you know that Cerveza Panama was a awarded a gold medal at the International Brewers Contest in 2008? That may be why it is one of the most popular beers in Panama.

The five most popular beers drank by the locals that are brewed locally are Atlas, Balboa, Crista, Panama and Soberana.

Atlas and Balboa are brewed by the Cervezaria National and Atlas tends to be the most popular choice among Panamanians, sort of like the Budweiser of Panama. Balboa tastes a bit better, but neither are as good as what is brewed at the Cervezaria de Panama.

Cervezaria de Panama, located in Chiriqui, is where Cerveza Panama is brewed, and it Read more
